The number of illegal border crossings at our Slovenian neighbors is skyrocketing. The authorities in our neighboring country reported that 56,800 people had been arrested in the period from January 1 to December 10. Almost all (96 percent) entered the country via Croatia.
The number of crossings across the Slovenian-Croatian border during this period was 54,540, 91 percent higher than in the comparable period of 2022, when around 28,580 crossings were recorded, Slovenian police said.
Peak transfers in August
The number of illegal entries from Croatia, which has been responsible for protecting the Schengen external border since the beginning of this year, increased this year until August, when it peaked. According to police reports, monthly figures fell in the autumn.
In October, the number of people apprehended dropped to below 6,000 and in November to below 5,000, it said. “Although this is still above this year’s average, it is lower than in October and November last year,” a police spokeswoman said.
Most people caught crossing the border illegally in Slovenia this year came from Afghanistan, Morocco, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Turkey.
Slovenia extends the controls for six months
Slovenia has been carrying out extraordinary border controls at the internal Schengen border with Croatia since the end of October. According to the official justification, the controls against Croatia and Hungary were not introduced because of migration pressure, but because of an increased risk of terrorism. Last week, controls were extended until December 21, after which Ljubljana plans to continue them for another six months.
