Concerns after new storms on Friday evening: Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol are affected. Rain and thunderstorms caused houses and streets to flood. In the Zillertal, a car even ended up in a mudslide! In Styria, the civil protection alarm had to be activated.

It is the next day in a row that heavy storms have caused chaos in the country. After causing widespread damage to streets and homes on Thursday, there was another bitter awakening on Friday night…

Civil protection alarm activated in Styria
In the western Styrian municipality of Krottendorf-Gaisfeld, massive flooding occurred in the evening hours due to heavy rainfall. That is why the disaster management authority gave the order to declare a civil protection alarm, according to the Styrian State Warning Center. Households had to be evacuated. The population was asked to avoid underground parking garages, cellars, underpasses and river areas due to the risk of flooding. The communities of Maria Lankowitz, Ligist and Hallersdorf were particularly affected, according to the Voitsberg Red Cross.

Person trapped by floods
According to the Red Cross, one person in Maria Lankowitz was trapped by the water and injured. In some areas in western Styria, the power went out. Around 8 p.m., a strong thunderstorm cell was also discharged from the west around Judenburg and Knittelfeld. This led to flooding in the areas of Fohnsdorf and Spielberg. In the municipality of Spielberg, there were several mudslides, flooding of cellars and underpasses, as well as in Kleinlobming.

A 19-year-old driver in Carinthia also suffered a severe shock. While driving, the young man from Wolfsberg was pushed against the railing of a bridge by masses of water flowing over the banks of a stream. The driver was unable to free himself. Emergency services arrived on the scene and freed the trapped person.

Storm damage in eastern Carinthia
In Carinthia, the areas of the Görtschitztal on the Görtschitztal Straße (B92) and the Klippitztörl Landesstraße (L91) were particularly affected by the storms in the east. There were closures here overnight due to flooding, but these were lifted again after the fire brigade had evacuated the area. Disruptions due to cleaning work were expected in both directions between Hüttenberg and Klein St. Paul on Friday morning.

Car caught by couple in Mure
But in the west of the country, in Tyrol, there was again serious weather damage on Friday night: due to the heavy rain, several mudslides occurred there. In the Zillertal, a car even ended up in a mudslide! The incident took place around midnight. A German couple was hit and both escaped unharmed.

A new mudflow also occurred in the Landeck district. There were also landslides in the rear Kaunertal.

Storm warnings also in the morning
Several severe weather warnings are still in effect in the country on Friday morning. According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center (uwz), a red warning level applies in parts of Burgenland and Lower Austria. There, the last thunderstorms and showers will move into Hungary in the morning. Unrest may also occur in the west, in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. There is an orange warning level.

There is a good chance that regional showers and thunderstorms will occur again. In the evening, heavy storms will probably move from west to east. Nevertheless, the daily maximum temperatures will rise to 36 degrees!
