Dramatic scenes unfolded in Tyrol’s Pitztal on Thursday: during the descent of the 3,774-meter-high Wildspitze, a German (60) fell several meters into a crevasse. The son – the two formed a rope team – was able to prevent his father from falling again. He raised the alarm while his father was hanging upside down in the crevasse.
On Thursday, the 60-year-old German climbed with his 21-year-old son from the Breslauer Hütte via the Mitterkarjoch and the Taschachferner to the 3,774-meter-high Wildspitze. After reaching the summit, the duo returned to the valley via the same path.
The crevice was partially covered with snow
At an altitude of about 3,550 meters above sea level, the mountaineers came to a crevasse about 80 centimeters wide and partially covered with snow.
“Both climbers were wearing glacier gear and were tied to a rope team with a single 60-meter rope. The son was the first to cross the crevasse without any problems. When the father tried to cross the crevasse, he fell into the crevasse,” police reported.
Son was able to prevent another fall
The 21-year-old son managed to break his father’s fall, leaving him hanging upside down in the crevasse of about three to four meters. Fortunately, the descendants were able to prevent another fall!
To the hospital by emergency helicopter
The son called 911 and watched over the father until the emergency services arrived. He was then rescued and flown to Zams Hospital by emergency helicopter. The son was unharmed. The mountain rescue service, the helicopter crew and the Alpine police were on duty.
