The city has now presented its (expensive) solution to the discussion about the Lueger statue on the Vienna Ring, which has been smoldering for years: a temporary installation right next to the monument.
“The discussion about the statue of Karl Lueger has been particularly intense since 2020. In May last year there was a round table discussion with 40 participants,” says Alderman for Culture Veronica Kaup-Hasler (SPÖ). It became clear that extreme positions could not be maintained, but that more was needed than the additional governance added in 2016.
Make the square a place of memories and education
“We wanted to do something to counteract this and decided to give the image a permanent artistic context,” says Kaup-Hasler. The sculpture, created by Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch, is intended to make the square a lively place for commemoration and education. Because even negative chapters are part of our history that cannot be erased. The work shows the silhouettes of 15 Lueger-associated artifacts in the public space.
Permanentes Artwork 500,000 Euros
Construction of the Karl-Lueger-Platz must begin as soon as possible. After a year, the 100,000 euro installation will be removed again. Because the tender for the permanent artwork will start in the autumn. This would then cost more than 500,000 euros. But at least stay longer.
