More than 100 people took part – Trieste prison riot: eight injured

In a revolt in one Eight people were injured in the prison in Trieste on Thursday night. Prisoners had set fire to bed linen, towels and mattresses – almost half of the prisoners took part in the uprising.

The ‘Ernesto Mari’ prison houses 260 prisoners – it is actually only meant for 150. According to the ANSA news agency, prisoners complained about the overcrowding, which makes living conditions in the facility very difficult and worsened by the heat wave.

Ultimately, more than 100 inmates took part in Thursday’s riot, which left several injured. Photos show prisoners waving burning sheets from windows. Police eventually stormed the building and clashes broke out.

Patients with heart disease were transferred
Five occupants had to be treated for smoke inhalation. According to ANSA, two inmates with heart conditions were moved outside the prison for safety reasons. No one’s life is in danger, local media reported. Ten ambulances and one medical vehicle were present.

In recent months, there have been several reports about the difficult situation in the prison of Trieste. Some prisoners complained that they were forced to sleep on the floor on mattresses full of bedbugs.
