None of the dozen pilot whales stranded on the Scottish Orkney island of Sanday survived. All 12 animals had to be euthanized, the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said. Their condition has steadily deteriorated.
“They sustained crushing injuries from their own weight and there is a high probability that they inhaled water as the tide came in,” the report said. The animals were lying on very soft ground and sank even deeper into the sand. After the tide washed over them, the whales were unable to save themselves.
As reported, a total of 77 pilot whales stranded on Sanday (see video above). Of these, 65 were already dead, while the remaining 12 had already been euthanized. Retrieving the whales would require a “massive, multi-agency effort,” says Emma Neave-Webb of BDMLR. Local farmers transported the dead marine animals using tractors and trailers.
The investigation to find out why the mass stranding occurred in the first place will begin next Friday. Some animals will undergo autopsies.
