Alexandra C. waited huddled in a garage as Hurricane “Beryl” razed her adopted home, the small Caribbean island of Carriacou, to the ground at 150 mph. She saw the roof of her house fly past. “It’s a nightmare,” the Graz resident says in the Krone+ interview.
“Within a few hours, everything you know has fundamentally changed – it’s like a nightmare!” With these words, Alexandra C. describes the difficult hours since Hurricane “Beryl” hit her adopted home, the Caribbean island of Carriacou. Traveling at 240 kilometres per hour, it devastated the small piece of land in just 30 minutes on 1 July. At the moment, Beryl is still a Category 4 hurricane, the second highest level, but will eventually be upgraded to Category 5. Almost no house on Carriacou can withstand the storm.
The shock is still deep
Alexandra C. has been living on the ‘Island of Reefs’, as Carriacou is also called, for twelve years. The Graz resident came as a diving instructor and stayed out of love. For a few weeks, she and her husband had been staying at a friend’s holiday home to take care of her animals. “Luckily for us, one of the few brick houses on the island – the wooden house where we stayed before – was completely destroyed by the hurricane.”
How emotionally affected the young woman is, you can see during the video call. “It is very difficult for me to think about everything and describe it,” she says. With us, he still does it.
