After a gang war escalated in Vienna in recent days, the police are now doing everything they can to ensure safety with special operations. The knife incidents were particularly brutal. But how safe do Viennese feel in the 20th district? krone.tv asked.
“The 20th is a disaster right now. You can read what was going on. The police are patrolling a lot right now, but the question is: for how much longer?” said the 61-year-old Viennese in frustration. The general mood is tense, especially among long-term residents who are experiencing the changes in their neighborhood firsthand.
“I don’t feel safe”
But how safe do residents actually feel? Franz from the 20th district sums it up: “No, I don’t feel safe actually. Nothing has happened to me yet. I think we have a lot of foreigners in this neighborhood and the police don’t really do much about the violence.”
“I was attacked in March”
Another aspect of insecurity is highlighted by personal experiences: “Not really. I was only attacked in March,” says pensioner Rosemarie. “So I didn’t really notice the police presence. As a man, I would say I feel safe. But as a woman, it might be different,” says Tobias.
There are similar concerns from surrounding neighborhoods: “I live in the 21st, but you don’t feel safe. “Especially as a girl, you don’t feel safe on the street alone,” says 18-year-old Vanessa.
