On Saturday evening, a driver in Lower Bavaria hit six passers-by with his car while fleeing from police, seriously injuring four of them. The injured were visitors to the ‘Danube in Flames’ festival in Vilshofen (Passau district), a police spokesman said.
The 24-year-old Georgian was driving towards the event participants when, while turning left, he drifted to the right at excessive speed.
Escape from the police
At this time, it is believed that four of the victims were seriously injured, police said Sunday morning. No further information was available on the nature and severity of the injuries. According to police, there were a total of eight people in the man’s vehicle, including five children.
The police wanted to check the driver on Saturday evening on the B8 between Passau and Vilshofen. However, the man fled towards Vilshofen at much too high a speed. After the accident, the fugitive continued driving without caring for the injured.
Police officers injured
While still in Vilshofen, the man and his car came to a dead end. He got out and fled on foot, but was apprehended by officers shortly afterwards. He slightly injured two police officers.
The promenade festival “Danube in Flames” attracts visitors by the thousands. Visitors are on one side of the Danube, while fireworks are taking place on the other side.
