In the Schmiding Zoo in Krenglbach near Wels, a baby gorilla was born for the first time in Austria, according to the zoo. It was a difficult birth for mother “Kibibi”; she was so weak afterwards that the zoo team had to temporarily take over the care of the newborn.
Now mother “Kibibi” is fit again and she lovingly takes care of her child herself. In a few days mother and child will also be visible to visitors of the zoo.
The birth of the first Austrian baby gorilla was anything but easy. A few hours after birth, “Kibibi” stopped caring for the baby and left him screaming next to him.
Nurses took over baby care
“We decided to intervene, were able to save the little one and take over his care temporarily,” says zoo director Andreas Artmann. The baby was given some glucose and bottle feeding.
After three days, the gorilla mother had recovered enough to be able to care for the children herself. Mother and child spend a few days in a non-visible part of the gorilla house, after which they move into the indoor enclosure, which is also visible to visitors.
