The US decision to station long-range missiles in Germany is causing tensions around the world. The Kremlin is furious and openly threatens to target European capitals with Russian missiles. But how real is the danger? krone.tv spoke to Eastern Europe expert Alexander Dubowy about the explosive situation.
“This deployment has been planned for a long time and does not come as a surprise,” Dubowy explained. “The missiles should not be ready for use in Wiesbaden until 2026 and are conventional, that is, non-nuclear.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the missile deployment as a “step toward the Cold War.” “Russia has deployed nuclear missiles in Kaliningrad and announced tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. These missiles are intended to deter NATO and reduce the likelihood of conflict,” Dubowy said.
War determines the future of Europe
How the war ends will have a lasting impact on European security. “A Russian victory would be catastrophic and could lead to further conflict in Europe,” Dubowy warns. “It is critical that Ukraine restores its international borders. This is the only way the European peace order can remain stable.”
Ukraine is unlikely to join NATO
NATO sees Ukraine as a potential future member. The allies see the country on an “irreversible path” to membership. Ukraine’s accession to NATO is unlikely at this point, the expert explains: “A country at war can hardly become a member of NATO. Security guarantees and military support are more important. Symbolic gestures are a powerful signal, but more is needed to resist Russian pressure.”
Soviet weapons are not in the best condition
“China provides Russia with important technologies for missile production and is a major market for Russian energy,” Dubowy said. “Without this support, Russia would not be able to wage the war at such intensity. North Korea and Iran also play a role, especially through military components and drone technology. Without China’s support, Russia would not be able to sustain this conflict at such intensity for too long. While you can rely on old Soviet stockpiles, they are not always available and not in the best condition. And China provides the necessary modern technologies to eventually maintain Russian missile production here,” the Middle East expert explained.
Trump and Russia
A possible election victory for Donald Trump would further complicate the situation. Trump has announced that he wants to end the conflict within 24 hours. Dubowy remains skeptical: “Trump promises a lot, but during his term from 2016 to 2020 he failed to resolve the Donbass conflict or negotiate a new security order. Russia is seeking a dictated peace, not real negotiations.”
