Multiple accidents – selfie dramas: the camera as the last witness

Date:

Selfies – every fourth young person in Austria takes a picture of themselves every day, the intensity decreases with age. About 60 percent of 50 to 60-year-olds take a picture of themselves every week. And sometimes the camera takes the last picture in a person’s life.

Such as Martin S. (57) from Ansfelden, who died in Tyrol while photographing himself during a mountain trip on the Mittlerer Kreuzjoch near Nasserreith on the ridge. He fell 100 meters, now his brother found the “last witness”, the camera that led to the mountaineer who had been missing since October.

It wasn’t until February of this year that a nighttime selfie in the Jaukerbach in Linz caused tragedy. Daniela M. (37) from Linz wanted to take a picture, made a mistake and fell into the factory moat. Her companion Markus A. (33) from Vienna wanted to save her, jumped into the water and drowned. The 37-year-old was pulled ashore at the last minute by emergency services and, after waking up from the coma, reported that she herself had caused the accident with the selfie attempt.

It wasn’t a selfie that caused an accident in St. Gotthard in mid-April, but a photographer (58) stood on the tracks of the Mühlkreisbahn and became so absorbed in his subject that he didn’t hear the train. He was rammed, catapulted over an embankment and seriously injured.

On the other hand, in October of the previous year, a photo accident involving a woman from the Mühlviertel ended fatally in Bad Gastein. According to eyewitnesses, the 57-year-old took a step too far back and fell 80 meters deep.

In May 2020, a 16-year-old survived a four-meter fall in Bad Ischl after losing her balance while taking a selfie on the balcony.
