Schönbrunn Zoo is happy for the first time with four Arctic wolf cubs that saw the light of day at the end of April. All four are safe and sound. They can now be admired by visitors playing, drinking and exploring together.
After seven long years, the four baby wolves were born in a deep den in the Schönbrunn Zoo after successful offspring breeding. Since the end of April they have been raised there by their mother. “In the beginning, wolf cubs have their eyes closed and are completely helpless. They need the protection of the den and the care of the mother. They also have their first social experiences with the pack,” reports zookeeper Paul Wagner.
The descendants are the first of the current Schönbrunner wolf pack. The puppies are nursed for the first three months. But over time, they slowly begin to eat meat.
“Packaging composition fits”
“The female came to us in 2017 from Safari Park Knuthenborg in Denmark, the two males from Safari Park Monde Sauvage in Belgium the year before. The breeding success confirms that the composition of the pack fits,” says zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
Known for their brilliant white coat
The Arctic wolf lives in the northern regions of North America and Greenland. “The brown colored young are difficult for enemies to see in the burrows. Later, the radiant white fur makes them almost invisible to prey in their snowy home,” explains Hering-Hagenbeck.
