A holiday with an adventure factor? Many people look for it, but in this case it was involuntary and came about through a miscalculation. A German family of five went dangerously wrong in Tyrol’s Zillertal, and only an emergency call helped. The mountain rescue arrived.
One by one: After the cable car ride up the mountain, the family of five (children aged 3, 10 and 12) wanted to descend from the Wiesenalm to Zell am Ziller on Monday.
Initially, the Germans used a marked hiking trail. In the last section before you reach the valley, you are on an asphalt road. The holidaymakers found this too ‘boring’, as they later had to admit with remorse.
Came across old Jägersteig on my mobile phone
The father then took his mobile phone out of his pocket and looked for an alternative. He came across an old Jägersteig that apparently also leads into the valley. The problem: a devastating storm caused devastation in the area in July of the previous year. “The cleaning work is still going on, some of the wood is still lying everywhere, also on the path,” says Gerhard Daum from the Zell am Ziller mountain rescue service.
He and seven comrades left when the family finally could not make any progress in the increasingly rocky terrain and put out a distress call. The helpers climbed to the family and an abseiling operation was then necessary in sections to ensure a safe rescue.
Descent mastered, family grateful
“We chose the direct descent; that was the easiest,” Daum explains. About 300 meters further and an hour and a half later, the family was unharmed in the valley. Including the three-year-old child who witnessed the action in the rear carrier. “In the end, they survived the descent well and were grateful,” Daum says.
His tip: be careful with online maps, as older trails that are no longer accessible are often marked.
