The Güssinger hunting association has saved fawns in Burgenland from death by mowing with the latest technology. This achievement is the result of good cooperation between farmers and the hunting association.
Mowing in meadows and fields is especially dangerous for fawns in early summer. The young animals are hidden by their mothers in the tall grass and often cannot escape from the mowers. This leads to numerous brutal mutilations and fatal injuries to the defenseless fawns. Traditional search methods are time-consuming and often ineffective. Innovative solutions are therefore urgently needed.
Recently, a particularly dramatic case in Upper Austria led to horrors. A land tenant there allegedly prevented the use of drones, which are usually used before mowing work to save fawns. It is said that six fawns were killed in the field during mowing. The Güssinger hunting association and local farmers show that things can be done differently. With the help of drones and thermal imaging cameras, twenty fawns were saved from death this year in cooperation between hunters and farmers.
