According to a newspaper report, US President Joe Biden is planning far-reaching reforms of the Supreme Court. A major deficit must be closed: Biden wants to present a proposal next week that includes term limits for judges and an enforceable ethics code.
That’s according to the Wall Street Journal, citing two people familiar with the matter. Accordingly, Biden could also request a constitutional amendment to limit the president’s immunity.
So far, the president has spoken out against proposed reforms, such as term limits or increasing the number of justices. But some Democrats are calling for changes after former President Donald Trump appointed three conservative justices. Reforms would require congressional approval.
Upper age limit of 18 years
In October, a bipartisan group of legal experts advocated limiting the terms of U.S. top judges to 18 years, a move aimed at preventing partisanship and bolstering the judiciary’s reputation. If Republicans regain control of Congress in the Nov. 5 elections, Biden’s plan would likely be doomed to fail.
Trump, who will officially accept the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday, is currently running against Biden again in the Nov. 5 election.
Supreme Court reform could permanently alter the institutional balance and significantly limit Trump’s room to maneuver if he wins the election.
