At 12:20 on Wednesday, the mountain rescue service in Zell am See (district Pinzgau) was alerted: a tandem pilot had become stuck in a tree with his paraglider. The pilot and his passenger took off around noon in bad weather conditions from the Schmittenhöhe.
The flight of the paragliding entrepreneur from Kaprun finally ended in the Fürthbachgraben south of the Schmittenhöhe summit. The rescue helicopter team “Alpin Heli 6” was able to determine during a visual flight that both passengers were unharmed. The helicopter stationed in Zell turned away again. In the meantime, eight mountain rescuers from the local office in Zell climbed to the accident site in the Lauferalm area (784 m).
The pilot and passenger were unharmed
When they arrived, the mountain rescue service found the pilot and passenger in the tree, about 15 meters above the ground. The mountain rescuers used a special chainsaw to remove some branches. They then fought their way to the victims using tree rescue equipment. “We were able to rescue them after about an hour and a half and then brought them down to the valley unharmed,” said Thomas Schwaiger, manager of Zell Operations and the local office.
