Call to passengers: Global system failure paralyses Vienna airport

Date:

Massive IT problems at cybersecurity company Crowdstrike have been causing system disruptions worldwide since Friday morning. The airport in Schwechat is affected. There has been chaos for hours: the check-in and boarding processes for several airlines have been canceled. It is currently recommended to travel with hand luggage only.

Currently, there is a malfunction in the check-in systems of individual airlines worldwide. Schwechat Airport has also been affected by this problem since Friday morning. At Vienna Airport, all check-in and boarding processes for flights of Wizz Air, Ryan Air, Eurowings and Turkish Airlines currently have to be handled manually.

Significant delays on departure
“The check-in desks are fully staffed and we are working hard on manual processing,” the airport assures. Please note that there may be significant delays when departing from Vienna. However, there is good news for those who are only travelling with hand luggage and have already checked in online! You will not be affected by the outage. It is also recommended that all other passengers currently only travel with hand luggage.

The possible source of the disruption apparently lies with the American cybersecurity company Crowdstrike. A recording was played on the company’s customer service hotline from the American state of Texas in which the company announced that the Microsoft operating system was crashing in connection with the company’s own Falcon antivirus protection.

In addition to Schwechat Airport, other airports around the world are also affected by the problem. Berlin Airport temporarily suspended all flights, a spokesperson for the Reuters news agency said. But banks and media also reported disruptions.
