IT problems at cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike crippled Windows systems worldwide on Friday, affecting airports around the world. Stranded people were often left to fend for themselves, without information and overwhelmed by airline staff.
Low-cost airline Wizz Air actually wanted to attract holidaymakers with its direct flight from Vienna to Tenerife, but after the serious IT failure the company sank into chaos and the staff was hopelessly overwhelmed and without any information.
“You are left alone”
The 22-year-old songwriter ‘Gooze’ from Vienna was stuck with his family at the airport in the Canary Islands on Friday: “It’s our first time here, it’s a shame. “You’re left alone, without information,” he tells the “Krone”. The four of us have now been rebooked on another flight the next day around 6 p.m.
Unfriendly staff, no information
Other passengers also report unfriendly airline staff and missing or incorrect information: “After initially being told to come to the airport, we just received an email saying we were NOT allowed to come to the airport.” Wizz Air is also currently unable to rebook flights.
At the moment, passengers have no choice but to wait at the airport. And hope that you can travel home someday.
