At Germany’s land borders, significantly more people were turned away this spring than before the checks in October 2023 (see video above). In April and May, 2,938 rejections were recorded at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.
That is 90 percent more than in the same period last year. The land border with Austria has been inspected since the autumn of 2015 in connection with the migration situation. The temporary controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland have already been extended several times and are expected to continue until 15 December.
There have been different legal opinions for about ten years about whether people who apply for asylum at the EU’s external borders can be rejected or not. The German government has concerns about European law here.
Decrease of 19 percent
In the first half of this year, 121,416 new applications for protection were filed in Austria’s neighbouring country, which is around a fifth (19 percent) less than in the same period last year. At the same time, fewer suspected smugglers were arrested (203 compared to 290).
To permanently reduce the numbers, not only control is needed, but also the rejection of all people who are already registered as asylum seekers in another EU state, said Union MP Christoph de Vries.
Checks during the Olympic Games
The border controls that were supposed to guarantee the safety of the European Football Championship will end next Friday. In connection with the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games, the next controls will follow soon. From Saturday 20 July to 30 September, the temporary measure will apply at the German land border with France and on air traffic to the neighbouring country.
