Huge swarms of exotic cnidarians are currently on the move on the New Danube. What is this strange natural spectacle about and are the creatures even dangerous?
On Thursday afternoon, many swimmers were amazed by the white carpet that suddenly appeared on the relief channel of the Neue Donau, not far from weir 1. The jellyfish are now loose in Vienna!
“Everything was full of animals. It looked like it was snowing under water,” said “Krone” reader Jennifer Huber-Stern in surprise.
Proof of good water quality in the Danube
The current high water temperature is mainly responsible for the appearance of the exotic animals. It should rise to over 25 degrees Celsius. The New Danube currently has a warm 27 degrees, in the Old Danube it is even 28 degrees.
This is a good sign for the city of Vienna. The presence of the animals is considered a natural indication of good water quality, as they react particularly sensitively to environmental influences and can only develop in clean water, as stated by Vienna Waters (MA 45).
Previously known events in Vienna: the Old Danube, the New Danube, the port of Kuchelauer on the Danube and various floodplains.
At the same time, it becomes all-clear. There is no reason to worry, because the small animals are completely harmless to humans. Although freshwater jellyfish have stinging capsules, they cannot penetrate human skin.
The phenomenon usually only occurs once a year. If you want to witness this unique natural spectacle, you have to be quick!
