A forest fire broke out in Kals am Großglockner in East Tyrol on Sunday morning. The trigger was probably a lightning strike a few days ago. Due to the impassable terrain, firefighting can only be carried out from the air.
Major operation in Kals am Großglockner. Smoke was reported in a steep forest area in the Lana district on Sunday morning. The fire is believed to have started on Thursday evening. According to witnesses, lightning struck. However, the fire was extinguished by the rain.
Fire chief Alexander Tembler confirmed this to the “Krone”: “As a result, the ground probably warmed up over the days and a ground fire broke out. “The fire started on Sunday morning.”
At the moment, there are numerous emergency services from the Kals and Huben fire brigades present. Floriani youths had to be flown to the fire site via the steep terrain. The Klagenfurt dragonfly is also in use and brings water to the source of the fire.
The fire is now under control, but it has not yet been declared out. “The area has to be excavated because it is a ground fire. You also have to work with the thermal imaging camera there,” Tembler explains.
Memories of 2010
14 years ago, a large forest fire spread where the emergency services are currently fighting the fire. From April 24 to May 3, 2010, 485 people were employed the entire time. During more than 2,000 firefighting flights, 1.5 million liters of water were dropped from helicopters over the fire site.
