A 22-year-old hiker was killed by lightning in Oberpinzgau on Sunday evening. The Carinthian, unlike his brother, was hiking on the Salzburg side of the main Tauern ridge during a heavy thunderstorm. That was his downfall.
According to a report by the Alpine police, the young man was struck by lightning at around 2,300 meters above sea level. The 22-year-old was on his way to the Rudolfshütte in the Stubachtal with his brother in the Kasler Tauern.
When a heavy thunderstorm broke out, one brother took shelter under a rock while the other, the 22-year-old, moved on.
The emergency doctor could no longer help
After the storm passed, the relative found his brother dead and called the emergency doctor. The emergency doctor who arrived with a rescue helicopter team could not help anymore. The dead man was rescued by the air police and brought to the valley.
