Important elections for the EU – Harris versus Trump: “Worlds collide”

Date:

US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he is withdrawing from the presidential race. There is no time to sleep now for his logical successor, Vice President Kamala Harris, says the Secretary General of the Austrian Association for European Policy (ÖGfE), Paul Schmidt. In the background, work is already being done on the positioning.

What would their chances be if it actually came to a duel between Trump and Harris? “From the perspective of an observer from Europe, it seems that American society is very polarized and very divided and that it is not just about Donald Trump, but ultimately about a feeling. Many Americans who propagate this Trumpism simply want to have less to do with the world and isolate themselves.”

In contrast, there are Kamala Harris and Joe Biden, who believe that the US has a global mission. “They stand for democracy and transatlantic relations with Europe, for human rights. They advocate for it and spend money on it; they are advocates for global security and defense. Two worlds are coming together here.”

“Kamala Harris will now have to catch up”
The coming days and weeks will tell how much of a chance Kamala Harris’ team really has. “I think the odds are 50:50.” But it’s certainly true that she’s going to have to play catch-up now, because she’s coming into this race fresh and new, while Donald Trump has been doing exactly that for months, if not years.”

“The stakes are high for Europe”
With Kamala Harris as a possible presidential candidate, the race starts again. “The election campaign will be very, very exciting. And there is really a lot at stake, especially from a European perspective. The question of transatlantic relations is essential for the European Union, for Europe.”

Von der Leyen’s second term: “Time for implementation”
According to Schmidt, much can be expected from Ursula von der Leyen’s second term. “This is the moment for implementation. A legislative period in which the emphasis is primarily on investing in competitiveness, strengthening democracy and where security and defence are priorities on the agenda.” “We have no time to lose here. The world is falling apart and that is why it is particularly crucial to show continuity and continue the work as quickly as possible.”
