Kamala Harris is raising donations for her presidential campaign at a record pace. The Republicans around their opponent Donald Trump are sometimes even going too fast. The conservatives want to prevent US Vice President Harris from having access to certain funds.
The New York Times and CNN reported that the Republican’s team had filed a complaint with the US Federal Campaign Finance Authority (FEC). Trump’s team accuses Harris of violating campaign finance laws by accessing funds previously raised by US President Joe Biden when he was a presidential candidate.
Republicans see “egregious” violations
“Kamala Harris is attempting to steal $91.5 million of Joe Biden’s remaining campaign funds,” the newspaper and broadcaster quoted Trump’s legal adviser David Warrington as saying in a complaint.
This is “blatantly” against the law. Warrington claims, among other things, that Harris is not entitled to the money because she is not yet the official candidate. It is also said that Biden cannot simply pass on the money because he is no longer active and therefore no longer entitled to the million dollar amount.
The move by Trump’s team is hardly surprising. The use of donations Biden raised during the campaign has been debated since Biden’s withdrawal became clear. Biden’s team changed the name of his campaign from “Biden for President” to “Harris for President” after his withdrawal.
Several legal experts argue that Harris’ access to the money was legitimate because her name was also registered as a running mate. Others, however, conclude that Harris does not have easy access to the money. It is unlikely that the dispute will be resolved before Election Day on November 5.
Harris Raises Over $250 Million
Harris is not really dependent on Biden’s role anyway. Since the American president announced his withdrawal, small and large donors have called in the money. Since then, historic amounts have flowed into her election campaign. The Harris campaign reported on Tuesday morning that it had raised more than 100 million dollars from 1.1 million donors in the first 41 hours.
FF PAC, also known as Future Forward, the largest outside group backing Biden, reported $150 million in pledges in the first 24 hours after Biden’s announcement Sunday afternoon.
Musk denies donating to Trump
Trump is doing well in terms of fundraising, but the amounts are not comparable to those of Harris. Tesla boss Elon Musk also rejects reports of an alleged donation of millions to the Republican presidential candidate. “I never said I gave $45 million to Trump,” Musk said on X. He did not initially provide further details. Musk often speaks out on political issues, but recently emphasized his “full support” for Trump.
