The announcement of Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress sparked a storm of protest. Several hundred people were arrested during demonstrations outside the parliament building the day before the Israeli prime minister’s appearance.
The protesters legally entered the Cannon House office building, part of the Capitol building complex, Capitol Police said Tuesday. Protests are not allowed inside the building.
According to media reports, the action was organized by the anti-Zionist Jewish organization Jewish Voice for Peace, among others. They spoke of more than 250 arrests out of a total of about 400 people. The police confirmed about 200 arrests.
Accusations of genocide
The protesters criticize continued US support for Israel in light of the Gaza conflict. “We are here in the building where members of Congress have repeatedly decided over the last nine and a half months to send the bombs that will cause genocide,” the organization wrote on Platform X. The building has been the site of similar protests in recent months.
Netanyahu plans to address the US Congress on Wednesday. Among other things, he is expected to discuss the Gaza war that has been raging for over nine months. The Israeli prime minister’s visit to Washington is marked by the political unrest in the US following the withdrawal of US President Joe Biden from the presidential race.
Meetings planned with US leaders
Both Biden and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump have announced meetings with Netanyahu. According to media reports, US Vice President Kamala Harris also wants to meet Netanyahu.
