Air traffic at Frankfurt Airport has been temporarily suspended due to an action by climate activists. A spokesman for the German Federal Police said that several protesters from the group “Last Generation” had entered the airport area early in the morning and had become trapped there.
“We are doing everything we can to remove the climate activists from the platform,” a spokesperson for the federal police said on Thursday morning.
The “Last Generation” claimed responsibility for the blockade. Six activists gained access and reached various points around the runways.
“Don’t come to the airport”
“Due to an ongoing demonstration at the airport, flights are currently suspended. Passengers are requested not to go to the airport for the time being. Instead, it is recommended that you check the status of your flight before going to the airport so that you can allow additional time for your journey,” Frankfurt Airport informs passengers.
Activists around the world had already drawn attention to climate change with protests at airports on Wednesday.
Vienna’s Schwechat Airport was also hit, where four people staged a demonstration in the check-in area and spilled paint.
