670 police officers on site – climate protests: airport ‘alert’

Date:

Last Generation drew global attention to climate change with airport protests on Wednesday. Vienna’s Schwechat Airport was also hit. Further disruptive actions are expected to follow on Saturday. The police and Schwechat Airport are said to be “well prepared for all eventualities.”

Vienna Airport said a total of 670 police officers were on scene “on full alert”, and the area is being monitored by multiple drones.

Further blockades must be prevented
The aim is to largely prevent disruptive actions like Wednesday’s in advance. Recently, four people held a demonstration in the check-in area and spilled orange paint, causing chaos in air traffic.

At the same time, for example, Frankfurt Airport was blocked by climate activists. As a result of the blockade, six connections between Vienna and Frankfurt (three arriving and three departing) were cancelled in the morning, Vienna Airport announced.

“Global exit from oil, gas and coal”
In a statement, the group Last Generation reiterated its call for “helping to shape and sign a legally binding international agreement governing the global phase-out of oil, gas and coal by 2030.”

Long prison sentences
The airport had already announced this weekend that it would prosecute and report any disruptive actions. Any action that results in or is attempted to disrupt flight operations or endangers passengers, aircraft or employees is against the law and can be punished with heavy prison sentences of up to 20 years – in the case of a fatal outcome even with life imprisonment.
