Because the fire alarm went off in an apartment in Innsbruck, the professional fire brigade had to be called. The supposed emergency turned out to be a false alarm. However, this brought with it enormous costs. Not an isolated case, as it turns out.
Mr Volgger from Innsbruck got very excited when some unusual bills arrived at his home some time ago. A total of 769.20 euros was charged for an unnecessary fire alarm.
And it happened like this: One evening in April, Mr. Volgger suddenly found himself in the middle of an operation by the professional fire brigade of Innsbruck. The fire alarm system in the house with the employees’ apartments of the Tirol Kliniken, which is connected to the control center Tirol, sounded the alarm.
After the fire brigade was deployed, the system was checked
“After discovering that there was no fire or smoke in the room, the emergency services left again,” the resident describes the incident. The man from Innsbruck had just cooked. But there was no noticeable smoke, nor any kind of fire, he claims.
Fortunately, nothing happened! Mr. Volgger still did not let the matter rest. He was worried about more false alarms. So he contacted the clinic’s apartment management. At his request, they had the fire alarm system checked.
The result: everything is fine. However, it was also found that there was a significantly increased amount of smoke during the alarm.
“Unfortunately, false alarms occur all the time.”
The case was not over yet: the man from Innsbruck received a bill for 424 euros for the fire brigade. The second bill concerned the inspection of the fire alarm system. The costs in this case amounted to a whopping 345.20 euros. “769.20 euros for dinner – not including the ingredients,” says Mr. Volgger ironically. But taken seriously, his case shows the costs that can result from false or false alarms.
“Unfortunately, false alarms occur time and again from fire alarm systems that are connected to the control center, for example during cooking or due to dust during construction work,” explains fire department director Helmut Hager. Simple smoke detectors for the home, on the other hand, are not connected to the control center.
As a gesture of goodwill, Tirol Kliniken will reimburse the test costs
By law, the fire department must charge for non-urgent actions. The city set the rate at 424 euros. The Tirol Kliniken also states that tenants in certain cases usually have to pay contractual costs for the operation and inspection of the fire alarm system. But there is good news for Mr Volgger: as a gesture of goodwill, the Tirol Kliniken will pay the 345.20 euros.
