Son of “El Chapo” – 2 Sinaloa Drug Cartel Leaders Arrested

Date:

In the US, a successful coup took place against the powerful and notorious Mexican drug cartel Sinaloa, with two leaders arrested.

Ismael Zambada García, co-founder of the cartel and known as “El Mayo,” and Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of the other co-founder “El Chapo,” were arrested Thursday in the U.S. state of Texas, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said. He described the cartel as one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world.

Two U.S. officials told Reuters that Zambada and Guzman Lopez were arrested after landing on a private plane in El Paso, Texas.

El Chapo sentenced to life behind bars
Zambada is one of the most important drug traffickers in Mexican history and co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel with El Chapo, who was extradited to the United States in 2017 and is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison.

Central fentanyl exporters
After El Chapo’s extradition, his criminal empire was continued by four of his sons – known as Los Chapitos or Little Chapos – who took over his faction of the cartel and became one of the largest exporters of fentanyl to the United States.
