A 30-year-old Bulgarian living in Germany caused an accident at the border crossing on the A9 in Hügelsheim on Saturday afternoon. He fled at speeds of up to 200 km/h, overtook on the hard shoulder and injured two police officers.
The man drove through the border crossing from Slovenia. Instead of stopping, the 30-year-old drove towards a militiaman – who had to jump aside – and fled along the A9 towards Graz. “With daring driving manoeuvres, he overtook several vehicles by overtaking the two-lane convoy, usually on the right side of the hard shoulder, in heavy holiday traffic,” the state police headquarters said.
Several police cars started the chase. Only after 40 kilometers the Graz-West motorway police were able to stop the man at the Webling roundabout. The fugitive crashed into the right side of a police vehicle.
Three children in the car
The driver was immediately arrested. His partner (30) and three children aged four, nine and eleven were also in the car! When asked why he fled, the man replied: hunger, crying children and not enough fuel.
The 30-year-old is now in custody. The woman and children were able to travel to Germany with family members. The police officers were treated in hospital for minor injuries.
The police are looking for witnesses, victims and photos/videos of the incident: 059133/6173200
