Several thunderstorms hit Styria on Sunday afternoon! The civil protection association and the state warning center had warned of heavy rain, gusts of wind and hail. Fire brigades had to be deployed near Kaindorf. The clean-up work after the last heavy storms in Aflenz and Thörl is still ongoing.
“In the early afternoon, thunderstorms with heavy rain, showers and hail are expected!” A warning that is unfortunately nothing new for Styria this summer. “The most dangerous time is from 2 p.m., after which the weather quickly calms down from the north,” it says.
Warnings are issued for minor flooding and falling branches due to wind. River banks should also be avoided.
The front moved over Graz and East Styria
From about 13:40 a heavy hailstorm hit the center of Graz. It rained, hailed, lightning and thundered heavily, and strong gusts of wind knocked down construction grids and street signs. After less than twenty minutes the front had retreated again.
At 13:50, the state warning center issued an acute weather warning. Up to 15:30, precipitation amounts of up to 45 milliliters and wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are possible. The affected districts are Hartberg-Fürstenfeld, Graz, Deutschlandsberg, Leibnitz, Southeast Styria, Weiz, Graz area and Voitsberg. “Several thunderstorms are forming in the area of the peripheral mountains,” it says.
Photos on social media show a lightning strike in the bell tower with the “Liesl” on Schloßberg. There was a disruption on Bim line 5 due to damage to the bridge.
Shortly afterwards, several fire brigades in the area of Hartberg and Kaindorf had to be deployed for storm and pumping work. “Fortunately, it’s not too bad,” says Matthias Novacek, spokesman for the local fire brigade association.
“We had 26 areas of damage in the afternoon, including flooded cellars and fallen trees,” reports Johannes Kellner, commander of the Kaindorf fire brigade.
According to GeoSphere, precipitation will cause a slight cooling at night. Monday, it will quickly be 30 degrees again with a sunny sky with some cloud formations. The trend will remain the same until midweek: warm days but cooler nights.
The federal army continues to operate
The Federal Army has been on relief missions in Thörl and Aflenz for a few days to lift blockades in the crossed Feistringbach. Eleven soldiers will be deployed here until the middle of next week.
The drinking water in Thörl and parts of Aflenz has been contaminated by the storms and is gradually improving. It is expected that it will be drinkable again without boiling at the beginning of this week, Mayor Günther Wagner announced on social media.
