In Tuscany, thousands of fish carcasses have been floating in the lagoon of the town of Orbetello for days. A total of 200 tons of eels and other fish died in just three days. Restaurants close to the sea are being avoided because of the smell.
An unusually large number of fish are currently coming to the surface in Tuscany, Italy, and dying after hours of torment. The cause is the high water temperature in the lagoon, which has been 35 degrees for the past few days. According to Italian media, these are currently the highest temperatures in the entire Mediterranean.
Here you see a recording of Orbetello.
Blue crabs died
Fishermen tried to pump cool water into the lagoon, but to no avail. It did not help to stop the fish deaths. Blue crabs, which eat clams and other small fish, also died. Tons of fish carcasses have now been dumped in Orbetello.
Hygiene emergency?
There are fears that the decomposed carcasses could lead to a sanitary emergency. Restaurant and bar owners are already complaining of heavy losses, as places near the sea are avoided because of the stench. The president of the Tuscany region, Enrico Giani, wants to declare a state of emergency to support the fishermen and women affected.
