70 couples married simultaneously in the Afghan capital, Kabul. The preparations would have taken several weeks. The organizers were especially concerned about a possible attack on the celebration. Parties and weddings have been attacked by extremists in the past.

After the Taliban takeover: Parties are hardly affordable anymore
After the militant Islamist Taliban came to power in August 2021, Afghanistan has been facing a severe economic crisis. Many couples can no longer afford the usually large and expensive festivities. “Many of them stay engaged for years, but can’t tie the knot.”
