Venezuela’s president claims the country’s “sovereignty,” and the opposition leader believes that repeating the elections would be a disrespect to Venezuelans who “expressed themselves in very adverse conditions, where there was fraud and we still managed to win.”
The President of Venezuela, Nicholas Madurohas defended the “sovereignty” of the South American country and the capacity of its institutions to resolve any dispute that arose after the July 28 elections, in response to the proposal of the leaders of Brazil and Colombia regarding the possible organization of a second election date to deal with allegations of fraud.
“The conflicts that exist in Venezuela, of whatever nature, are resolved among Venezuelans, with their institutions, with their law, with their constitution,” Maduro said.
Venezuelan opposition leader, Maria Corina Machadohas also rejected this proposal by the presidents of Brazil and Colombia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro, respectively, to repeat the presidential elections in Venezuela or form a coalition government. The proposal comes after complaints of fraud by the opposition after the declaration of Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the elections.
“We are going to a second election and, if we don’t like the results, what should we do, a third? And a fourth? And a fifth until Maduro is satisfied with the results? Would you accept that in your country? the result is not satisfactory, then elections will be held again?” he asked in an interview, the excerpt of which he shared via his profile on the social network X.
“The elections took place and Venezuelan society expressed itself under very unfavorable conditions, where there was fraud and we still managed to win,” Machado said.
The governments of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico are working on a solution to the crisis, a mediation effort that is supported by the United States, among others.
