“On warm days we lose 10 centimeters of ice”

Date:

The “Krone” accompanies the Salzburg ice researchers as part of the glacier series to measure the ice giants. The figures on the decline of the eternal ice in the high mountains are frightening.

On warm summer days like this week, the glaciers hardly move away. “On warm days, we lose ten centimeters of glacier ice,” says Bernhard Zagel. For the surveyors, the season has not even started yet. “We don’t actually measure in mid-August,” explains the researcher who coordinates the glacier measurements in the Stubachtal around the Weißsee.

For the series ‘Krone’ about the disappearing ice giants of Salzburg, Zagel and his colleague Gabriel Seitlinger made an exception and took us to the Stubacher Sonnblickkees for a local inspection.
