Three climbers died in one week on the Swiss Matterhorn. The Matterhorn is considered one of the deadliest mountains in the world.
As the police in the canton of Valais announced on Saturday, an alpinist died on Friday when he fell some 800 meters into the depths. Just a few days earlier, two mountaineers fell 1,000 meters to their deaths.
Bodies discovered during reconnaissance flights
These two mountaineers set off from a mountain hut on Wednesday morning to climb the 4,478-meter-high summit. When they did not return from their tour as planned, a search party was launched. During a reconnaissance flight, the two were found lifeless on the north side of the Matterhorn.
Stormfront
According to the police, the two dead have not yet been identified and the cause of the accident is still being investigated. The landlord of the Hörnlihütte, where the two mountaineers were staying, reported that a storm front had appeared a few hours after they left. “She probably got her,” he told the German Press Agency.
According to the police, the man who died on Friday was probably alone on the Matterhorn. He fell about 800 meters on the Matterhorn glacier while descending at an altitude of about 4,200 meters. This alpinist has also not yet been identified.
The Matterhorn is considered one of the deadliest mountains in the world. Since the first ascent in 1865, hundreds of people have died trying to reach its striking summit.
