On Friday afternoon, a heavy storm surprised two climbers on the Schneeberg, the highest mountain in Lower Austria. The duo was stuck. It was a difficult operation for the alerted mountain rescuers.
Under “extremely difficult conditions” the climbing duo had to be rescued by emergency services on Saturday night. The two were surprised by a heavy storm on the Schneeberg in the upper third of the Stadelwandgrat on Friday afternoon around 16:30. Suddenly nothing worked anymore. The 54-year-old Hungarian and the 45-year-old German were stuck.
After no improvement in the weather, they made an emergency call. Specialists from the Reichenau mountain rescue team immediately set out to rescue the victim. After a helicopter deployment was not possible due to the weather, seven mountain rescuers and an alpine police officer joined the climbers. After two hours, the duo was found unharmed around 1:30 a.m. We then headed together towards the Höllental-Bundesstraße, where everyone arrived safely around 5 a.m.
“Afraid they won’t survive the night without damage”
The two climbers were completely inadequately equipped to spend the night, so it was decided to descend together in the dark. There were concerns that “they might not survive the night on the wall without damage to their health,” according to the Reichenau mountain rescue service.
It was the mountain rescuers’ twelfth mission in just ten days, with four moves on Friday alone.
