Sonar on Tuesday – Search for missing father interrupted

Date:

The search for a 44-year-old father from Steinhaus near Wels, who sank in the Traunsee on Saturday while diving with his wife and three other ‘buddies’, is currently suspended. The search will continue on Tuesday with sonar that is being brought into the depths.

Meanwhile, what was planned on Saturday has been reconstructed: the 44-year-old and his 36-year-old wife wanted to descend from Steinhaus to a depth of 20 meters with a group of three other people. The 36-year-old had problems during the descent at a depth of only five meters and therefore carried out an emergency ascent. According to initial reports, her husband tried to help her and she broke free.

Major operation with divers and sonar
The other members of the group also emerged again in the meantime, because they had become lost due to poor visibility. After her husband did not come to the surface, the 36-year-old alerted the diving instructor, who was in the immediate vicinity with another diving group. He immediately made two consecutive dives at 40 and 50 meters, but could not find the father of the family.

A large-scale search was launched involving water rescue teams, fire brigades and police. The water around the dive site was searched using a grid and sonar equipment – including a towed sonar. Unfortunately, this was not successful and the search was called off shortly after 20:00.

Currents make searching difficult
On Tuesday, a new search for the missing person will be conducted using towed sonar. The Traunsee is up to 160 meters deep, at this point the steep wall drops 120 meters, currents make it difficult to limit the search area.
