Another case of animal abuse that does not improve the image of show jumping. When his horse refuses an obstacle, a tournament participant hits his horse on the head with his fists and whip in front of the camera – the Austrian Equestrian Sports Association is now investigating a ban on the rider.
Last weekend brutal photos were taken during a standard show jumping competition in Ebreichsdorf, Lower Austria. This event is reminiscent of the incident of Olympic pentathlete Annika Schleu, who also lost her patience in front of the public last year and severely mistreated her horse. She has also been reported to the public prosecutor.

The disturbing video has been leaked to the Austrian Animal Welfare Association, which filed a complaint against show jumper Günter Wintersberger – because in its view the athlete violated paragraph 5 (“prohibition of animal cruelty”) of the Animal Welfare Act.
Association is aware
As the images prove, the animal is hurt unnecessarily. “Krone” animal expert Maggie Entenfellner is furious because Wintersberger clearly puts his own ambition above the welfare of his noble animal. “When I asked about it, the equestrian sports association was also baffled and will start investigations. The rider is in any case threatened with a ‘red card’ and it is also explained why the competition jury did not intervene immediately,” says horse friend Entenfellner.
