Now that the ragweed is blooming, the next pollen season is just around the corner. According to the forecast of the Austrian Pollen Information Service, the weed will cause serious pollution from the end of August. The reason: the humid and warm weather of the past few weeks has led to an enormous bloom.
A clear trend has been visible for several years: the pollen season starts earlier and ends later. In some places, plant pollen, which is causing problems for more and more people, can now be measured almost all year round – in 2023, there were measurable pollen counts on 330 days.
Hazel and alder, ash and birch started early
This year too, hazel and alder woke up from their ‘winter sleep’ two to three weeks earlier – compared to the long-term average. Ash and birch had a record-breaking early start and the grass season in eastern Austria started in April instead of early May.
Early last week, a first wave of ragweed pollen reached eastern and southeastern Austria – which is also considerably earlier than normal. The weed pollen was blown in large quantities from Hungary and Slovenia to Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and parts of Carinthia
