As the Wolf 2023 Status Report shows, the wolf population has increased, with 104 individuals roaming the forests last year. However, there has been a noticeable decline in the number of cracks in farm animals.
According to the report, the number of wolves in Austria increased by 24 animals in 2023 compared to the previous year. The number of detected wolf packs was six. There was evidence in all federal states, only Burgenland and Vienna were wolf-free. The most important areas where wolves occur in 2023 were Carinthia and East Tyrol, as well as in the Waldviertel and Mühlviertel.
Fewer sheep and goats are being killed
Despite the increased wolf population, the number of animals killed in 2023 has fallen by almost 37 percent compared to the previous year. “This is due to the reduction in losses among sheep and goats. Unfortunately, there were more losses among cattle, horses and wild game in 2023 than in the previous year,” says Rebecca Rau, author of the report. Most livestock losses were recorded in Tyrol and Carinthia.
