Tourism experts worry – Many holidaymakers leave early due to algae slime

Date:

Tourism experts in the northern Italian Adriatic Sea are complaining about losses due to the algae slime that has spread along the coast of several seaside resorts. Given the algae carpet, many tourists are reportedly avoiding the beaches of Rimini, Riccione, Fano and Pesaro. Many holidaymakers have left before the end of their planned stay.

In Fano near Pesaro, tourism experts are drawing a bad conclusion about the summer season, which was initially marred by bad weather. “Many holidaymakers left immediately after seeing the situation on the beach, even if they lost their deposits in the hotels,” said Luciano Cecchini of the hotel consortium “Fano Torrette Marotta,” according to media reports.

The smell drives many holidaymakers away
The slime ends up on the beach, especially on the coasts near Venice, Jesolo and especially in the south near Ancona. The algae slime is not dangerous, it is just disgusting and stinks. Many holidaymakers cannot stand the smell of the algae carpet.

In Pesaro, in the Adriatic Marche region, many beaches are deserted. The regional environmental protection agency (Arpam) confirmed that the quality of the sea along the coast is excellent. But the problem is that swimmers do not enter the water and avoid the beach because of the disgusting smell that comes from the algae.

Hotels with swimming pools very popular
In the resorts of Rimini and Riccione, swimmers are taking to swimming pools to cool off from the heat and the smelly beaches. Hotels with swimming facilities are booming. It is expected that more and more hotels and resorts will apply to the government to build swimming pools, which are expected to become increasingly popular in the coming years as climate change is expected.

Water temperatures of up to 30 degrees in some cases – this did not exist in the Mediterranean before. What consequences climate change will have in the long term is not yet predictable. Biologists and chemists want to test the water in the Adriatic Sea in the coming weeks. They want to get a more precise picture of what is happening in the water as a result of climate change.

Slime is problematic for small fishing boats
The fishing association “Confcooperative Fedagripesca” calls for the deployment of a committee of experts to monitor the development of the algae plague and to support measures for fishermen. Smaller boats in particular could not even go out to fish because of the slime. This obstructs the propellers and makes cleaning the mechanical elements very difficult. There is a danger that the engines of the fishing boats will melt because the filters become clogged with slime. There are also complaints about damage to the networks.
