After Taylor Swift’s concerts were cancelled due to attack plans, Coldplay will be warming up the atmosphere in Vienna from Wednesday. The highest security measures are in place in and around the Ernst Happel Stadium. But how safe do concertgoers feel? krone.tv asked around before the first Coldplay concert.
High security zone! Fans gather in front of the Happelstadion in the early afternoon. The first of four concerts by the English band Coldplay will take place on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
In total, 200,000 visitors will come. Stricter protection measures have been taken, the police check oncoming vehicles and check the concertgoers themselves with the help of search warrants. But can you enjoy a performance with so much safety?
“We feel safe”
The Sträter family has been on the scene since 6:00: “We feel safe,” the father proudly tells krone.tv. And this even though they have not yet been checked. For them, it is a holiday to Austria with a Coldplay concert as an extra.
“We drove to Vienna via Leipzig,” say best friends Antonia Sajnovic (19) and Elena Vebaric (17) from Croatia.
“There is a large police presence.”
There is a huge police presence around the stadium, with armed officers patrolling and travelling in groups. But that doesn’t seem to faze the fans. Juliane Berger (19) and her sister Daniela (24) from Klagenfurt are also confident: “I was already worried. Let’s hope it’s nothing.”
Fear of terrorism? Are you joking? Are you serious? “I think positively that everything will be fine,” says Daniela. And: “The police presence is big.”
Elena Fidesser (22) makes bracelets with Coldplay songs together with her sister and a friend. “Unfortunately,” says the Lower Austrian, her mother is not there. “We have to send her a lot of videos.”
A couple even came from Luxembourg for the spectacle. Sandy Schleich (33) and partner Raphael Pinto (29) find the atmosphere ‘relaxed’ because ‘safety is guaranteed.’
They are especially looking forward to their favorite song ‘A sky full of stars’.
