750 piglets in an animal transport vehicle, 29 hours on the road from Denmark to Serbia: a sad example of many on the European roads. The vehicle was checked at the Spielfeld (Styria) border crossing. The police officers soon realized that something wasn’t quite right here.
The national traffic service of the Styrian police carried out the checks in Spielfeld on Wednesday together with a veterinarian. Serious defects were noted in particular on the piglet transporter from Denmark: a faulty temperature monitoring system, used drinking water, incorrect housing of the animals. The driver, a 30-year-old Hungarian, was reported.
Calves on their way from the Czech Republic to Egypt
Moments later, the officers encountered another transporter with 33 calves. They were on their way from the Czech Republic to Egypt! Here too, the legally permitted transport time of twelve hours was clearly exceeded. A 55-year-old German is reported.
According to police officer Wolfgang Teutschl, the fact that no more transports with abuses were eventually discovered could also be related to the fact that Styria is often bypassed because of the strict animal protection laws, he tells the ORF.
