Three days after the luxury yacht ‘Bayesian’ sank off the coast of Sicily, divers have recovered the bodies of seven people. It is believed that the ship was hit by a monster wave and was not stable enough in the water.
As reported, it sank in just 60 seconds. It is conceivable that the hatch was left open or that the centreboard on the hull, which regulates the ship’s draft, was incorrectly adjusted. Open hatches, which allowed a large amount of water to enter the yacht in a short time, could have contributed to the rapid sinking of the ‘Bayesian’.
The engines, which were switched off during the storm, and the failure of the system that was supposed to close the hatches and access to the interior in critical cases, could also have led to the accident.
The black box is being investigated
Prosecutors investigating the case now want to examine the yacht’s black box. They hope to gain information about the causes of the shipwreck, which occurred at dawn on Monday after a strong hurricane. At present, it is mainly believed that there is a chain of human errors.
Sicilian prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosi is coordinating the investigation. The investigation into shipwreck, catastrophe, homicide by negligence and bodily harm is still ongoing.
“It was all predictable”
“The passengers should not have been in the cabins, the ship should not have been at anchor. And why was the crew not informed about the bad weather forecast? “It was all predictable,” says Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian shipping company Sea Group. According to him, the incident would not have been a risk if the correct manoeuvres had been carried out.
The fifteen survivors are represented by a large British law firm, which will take care of the compensation, among other things. One of the survivors is Angela Bacares, the 57-year-old wife of Mike Lynch, who himself died in the accident. The search for the 18-year-old daughter is still ongoing.
