Andrew Powell (57) from Wales was attacked in his home by a swarm of wasps and stung no less than 160 times. He survived the attack only by a lot of luck.
When the wasps invaded his home, Powell tried desperately to escape, but the wasps chased him. “I staggered to the front of the house and into the shower, but they followed me,” he told the BBC. They later counted 15 stitches on the back of his head alone. He lost consciousness shortly after.
A friend discovered Powell and took him straight to the hospital, where he was given epinephrine, morphine and co-codamol for the pain. ‘If they hadn’t done that, I would be dead,’ he says.
Why did the wasps attack? A farmer in the neighborhood had accidentally destroyed a wasp nest while mowing, which made the insects angry.
Powell is now recovering at home, but he remains weak and exhausted. “I haven’t slept since the incident because the pain is too bad,” he explained. “If it wasn’t for these amazing nurses, I wouldn’t be here.”
