Fatal attack – owner killed by leopard in Slovakian private zoo

Date:

A leopard killed its owner in a private zoo in Slovakia, probably attacking the man in an enclosure.

The 63-year-old man was found “without signs of life” in the leopard enclosure in the village of Jasenie, the Banska Bystrica regional police station said on its official Facebook page.

How the accident could have happened is still under investigation. There is currently no danger to the population.

The victim ran a private zoo on his own
Public television STVR reported, citing villagers, that the murdered man ran the private zoo all by himself. Even before the accident, there were fears that he would be overwhelmed. In total, he kept about twenty different pets and wild animals, including several species of monkeys, birds of prey and several breeds of dogs. He cared for both the animals and the visitors.

In Slovakia, despite the recently tightened legal regulations, there are still several, mostly very small, private zoos with big cats and other wild animals. In one of them, a lion killed its owner a year ago.
