Internship – Russian spy wanted for World Criminal Court

Date:

According to the Dutch authorities, the Russian secret service has tried to smuggle an agent into the International Criminal Court. A Russian officer of the military information service GRU has completed an internship with a false Brazilian passport at the International Criminal Court, the secret service AIVD announced in The Hague on Thursday.

The 36-year-old Russian was unmasked by the AIVD and arrested at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The International Criminal Court is currently investigating possible war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine. Russia launched a war of aggression against its neighbor on February 24.

“Threat was very great”
According to the AIVD, the Russian could have caused major damage to the International Criminal Court. “The threat from the intelligence officer was potentially very high.”

The man “used a well-thought-out cloak”, the AIVD said, “disguising all ties with Russia and especially the GRU.” He was sent back to Brazil on the next plane. The arrest was made possible by a collaboration between several international services. The incident reportedly happened in April, but has only just been made public. No further details were given.
