The name “Apophis” comes from the Egyptian universe of gods and is a negative number that is responsible for natural disasters. An asteroid is also called that – and for good reason, as science expert of ‘Krone’ Dr. Christian Mähr explains.
The Egyptian god Apophis is a constant antagonist of the goddess Maat, a threat to “cosmic stability” – and a fitting name for an asteroid discovered only in 2004 that, according to initial orbital determinations, is due to hit Earth on April 13, 2029, at a distance of 31,000 km/h. The impact would be equivalent to that of an atomic bomb containing 700 megatons of explosive TNT, which is 47,000 times the explosive effect of the Hiroshima bomb “Little Boy” and 14 times more than the largest atomic bomb ever detonated, called “Zar,” which was released in 1961 and tested on the Arctic island of Novaya Zemlya. The zone of “total destruction” was 70 kilometers in diameter, but no one was injured and the island is uninhabited.
